The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has partnered with IOTCOMM to installs 30,000 LTE Cat.1 compatible street lighting controllers,bringing modern intelligent street lighting management to the city.The system maintains a stable online rate of over 99.5%, significantly improving lighting quality and enabling effective operational cost control.
Bangkok, the capital and largest city of Thailand, is the country's political, economic, cultural, and transportation center. With a population exceeding 10 million, Bangkok is not only one of Southeast Asia's most vibrant international metropolises but also a major tourism, trade, and financial hub.
In the field of city lighting, the BMA recognized early on the importance of intelligent upgrades for energy efficiency and refined management, and has continuously explored advanced solutions.
To address the high energy consumption, maintenance costs, and citizen dissatisfaction associated with its traditional lighting systems, the BMA sought an intelligent upgrade for greater energy efficiency and refined management.
IOTCOMM initially piloted a Zigbee-based solution in Ratchaburi with success. However, Bangkok's dense urban landscape—characterized by signal interference from tall buildings, foliage, and electromagnetic noise—posed significant challenges to reliable connectivity. Existing complex power lines also rendered PLC and other wireless solutions impractical.
Furthermore, the new system needed seamless integration with Bangkok's existing management platforms to avoid operating multiple systems in parallel.
The IOTCOMM technology team flew from China to Bangkok to conducted an on-site signal survey in Bangkok, which revealed excellent coverage by dense 4G micro base stations. Leveraging this robust existing infrastructure, our engineers proposed a 4G LTE Cat.1 communication solution.

This technology was selected because it utilizes mature cellular networks to ensure stable, high-performance connections for massive numbers of devices. It offers wide coverage, strong signal penetration, and supports large-scale concurrent access with bidirectional real-time communication, end-to-end data security, and cross-regional mobility—all without the need to build dedicated base stations. Its rapid deployment, predictable costs, and seamless city-wide coverage made it the ideal choice for Bangkok's complex environment.
The project deployed a complete and reliable smart lighting solution. The implementation was simple and fast, with only few elements installed:
IOTCOMM® 4G LTE Cat.1 NEMA Lighting controller :Provides on/off and dimming control, remote management, real-time fault alarms, full electrical parameter acquisition).It can be embedded or externally mounted in various new lighting fixtures.
IOTCOMM® Plug & Play 4G LTE Cat.1 Zhaga Lighting Controller:Features remote monitoring, dimming, GPS, metering, and sensor input capabilities. Specifically optimized for LTE LPWA networks, its standardized Zhaga Book 18 interface allows for quick and easy installation.
Smart Platform:The cloud-based IOTCOMM® Streetlight Control Software enables 24/7 control, monitoring, maintenance, grid management, and full integration with the BMA's existing systems.

Following implementation, Bangkok's street lighting management has has achieved remarkable results:
On-Demand Lighting for Energy Conservation: The system automatically adjusts brightness based on real-time traffic and pedestrian flow, delivering immediate energy savings.
Proactive Alarms for Precise Maintenance: Streetlight faults and cable anomalies trigger alarms and are pinpointed on the platform within 3 seconds, drastically improving maintenance efficiency.
Scenario Modes for Flexible Management: Custom lighting scenes can be activated with one click for major events like Songkran Festival or New Year's Eve, enhancing the city's atmosphere. Managers can also schedule lighting remotely from anywhere.
Data Visualization for Scientific Decision-Making: All operational data is aggregated on an intuitive visual platform, providing precise support for lighting planning, energy auditing, and asset management.
